*show off 으스대다, 자랑하다
There was this scrawny one that acted like his assistant, relaying whatever Gon had to say to the others, and the bulky one, whose job was clearly to show off their power. 
*it look like ~인 것 같다
*team up 협력하여 일하다, 함께 뭔가를 하다
*rather than…보다는[대신에/…하지 말고]
*rather than friendship 우정보다는, 우정 대신에
It looked like they had teamed up out of an agreement or for some shared goal, rather than friendship.

*pop up out of nowhere 어디에서도 뚝딱 나타나다
He would pop up in front of me out of nowhere.
*trip ~를 넘어뜨리다
*execute [ˈeksɪkjuːt] 실행[수행]하다, 해내다
*scheme [skiːm] 계획, 책략, 책략을 꾸미다, 생각하다
Each time he executed one of his little schemes.
*minion 똘마니, 부하, 추종자, 앞잡이
*off beat 템포가 고르지 않게, 불규칙하게, 보통이 아닌

    리듬이 약간 엇박이었어요.
*hit an off beat 박자를 맞추지 못한 것처럼
His minions awkwardly laughed along with him like hitting an off beat.
*take pity on somebody …를 불쌍히 여기다, 애처롭게 생각하다
More and more kids were scared of Gon and took pity on me.

But no one told on him to the teacher.

The consensus seemed to be, Let's just see how it goes for both these weirdos.
*take joy in ~를 기뻐하다, ~를 즐겨하다
Those who took joy in watching the weak suffer. 
But one thing I knew for sure was that, if Gon wanted to see a change of expression from me, he would never win against me.
*wear oneself out ~을 지치게 하다
The more he tried, he would only wear himself out.

*no easy match 쉬운 상대가 아니다
Not before long, Gon seemed to realize I was no easy match. 
*rile [raɪl] (사람을) 귀찮게[짜증나게] 하다 (=anger)
He continued to rile me, but he seemed no longer as confident as he was before.
*chicken out 겁먹다, 물러나다
Is he chickening out? 
*behind one's back ~의 뒤에서, 비밀리에

The more I didn't react, and the longer I didn't ask for help, the higher the tension mounted in the classroom.

*once and for all 최종적으로[완전히], 단호하게, 단 한번만
Instead, he announced that he would have it out with me, once and for all.
Meanwhile, as her love came to an end once and for all.

AFTER LUNCH. TOMORROW. IN FRONT OF THE INCINERATOR.
*pompously 거만하게, 과시적으로

"I've warned you," Gon shouted pompously. 
*beat up ~를 두들겨 패다, 때리다[구타하다]
It's up to you now. Don't wanna get beat up?

Then don't show up. I will just assume you've chickened out, and I won't bother you anymore. But if you do show up, you'd better brace yourself.
Brace yourself for some trouble.

I said, get out of my way or I will knock you out!" Gon fumed, his face getting redder from holding back his anger.

By the next day, the whole school had heard about the showdown between Gon and me. 
*chitchatting 수다 떨기
The occasional chitchatting hinted at what would follow during lunchtime. 
Man, time drags.
*bet on 내기하다
+) What do you want to bet on?

+) They all put a bet on the race. 
    그들은 모두 그 경마에 돈을 걸었다.
"There's no way he's gonna show up there, don't you think?" Some kids even bet on who would win. I just focused in class as if nothing was happening. To me, time went by as usual, neither slow nor fast.

*plod on (특히 힘들거나 지루한 일을) 느릿느릿 걷다[하다]
I plodded on.
*afar 멀리, 아득히(far)

The expression on Gon's face was somewhat conflicted.

I had no idea how to read his face.
I would get sleepy after lunch, so my only thought was to take a nap back at the classroom. 
He must've slightly missed me because it didn't hurt. 
*knock somebody over ~을 때려눕히다
But before I could turn around, a kick knocked me over.
For every word, he gave a kick, ringing my body like a steady ticking of the clock. 
*ooze 스며들다, 새다
I was already lying on the ground, moaning, blood oozing inside of my cheek. But I still could never give him what he wanted.
*spill 쏟아지다, 흘러나오다
*spit out 뱉어내다
*huff (화가 나서) 씩씩거리다[씩씩거리며 말하다], 분개하다
Blood was spilling from my mouth. I spat it out.
"Stop. I can't give you what you want."
"What?" he asked in a huff.
"I have to act to give you what you want, and I can't. It's just impossible. So please stop now. Everyone's acting like they're scared of you, but they're actually laughing at you."
*obscene [əbˈsiːn] 음란한, 외설적인, 터무니없는 (=outrageous)
Every word that came out of his mouth was obscene. 
*curse 욕설, 저주
*sheer [ʃɪr] (크기정도양을 강조하여) 순전한
*sheer madness 완전한 광기, 정신 나간 행동

Gon's real name was Leesu. It was his mother who gave him that name.

They weren't well-off and in two years, when their own baby came along, they quickly gave Gon up for adoption. 
We were well-off.

youth detention center. It was at the Hope Center shelter that he fashioned the name Gon for himself.

"Do you have hanja letters for it?" I asked.
"No, I'm not into that complex shit. I just came up with it."

Dr. Shim got extremely angry in his low but fervent voice and regretted letting Professor Yun reach out to me in the first place

But this left a mark on his long-standing self-image as an intellectual, driving him farther apart from his son.

Before even having the chance to get to know each other.

Rather than feeling sorry for his son, he was more angry that the son he'd waited so long for had turned out to be such a mess.

As if he wanted Gon to hear it to the core, his voice trembling, his eyes hardly meeting mine.
The longer he talked, the harder Gon's face became.
*stale 신선하지 않은, 상한
My stomach was growling, and the pizza on the table was getting cold and stale.
*leave alone 혼자 두다
"You can stop now. I'm not here for your apology. It's Gon's job to apologize, so maybe you should leave us alone for him to do so."
"I'm sure he can speak for himself."
"Very well. Please enjoy the meal. Do call me if something happens."
*smirk 히죽히죽 웃다, 능글맞게 웃다
*dust off 먼지를 털어내다
Professor Yun put his hand firmly on Gon's shoulder before leaving the restaurant. Gon didn't react at the moment, but as soon as his father left, he dusted off his shoulder.
