*on the spot (일이 벌어지는) 현장에서, 즉각[즉석에서]

A small dot was left on the spot where the butterfly had been.

I hoped it'd gone to a safer place.

And I wished that I could've helped it avoid such discomfort.

*a staring contest 눈싸움, 기싸움

*in the first place 처음부터 

Other people struggled to keep their eyes open, when I just didn't know how to close my eyes in the first place.

Why was he angry at me after doing such a thing to the butterfly?

There was only one person I could ask about these questions.

"Will I live like this my entire life, feeling nothing at all?" 

 이렇게 영원히 아무 느낌 없이 저는 계속 살게 될까요?

*slurp [slɜːrp](무엇을 마시면서) 후루룩 소리를 내다, 후루룩 마시다

*slurp down one's porridge 죽을 후루룩 들이마시다

I asked after slurping down a bowl of udon.

It was either bread or noodles.

That's a hard question. But I'll say this, the fact that you asked that question in the first place is in itself a big step. So let's keep trying.

*inherent [ɪn|hɪrənt] 내재하는 (=intrinsic)

You said there was an inherent problem with my brain.

*external stimulation 외부 자극

Well, instead of eating almonds, I was thinking external stimulation might be worth a try. The human brain is actually dumber than you think it is.

My brain has been still. 뇌는 그대로였어요.

*talent for 무엇을 잘하는 재능

*tone-deaf person 음치, (귀로) 음을 구별할 줄 모르는[음감이 없는] 사람

That's what practice can offer-miracles and also limitations.

*convinced 납득한, (전적으로) 확신하는 

"Well, no, I was thinking, like I hadn't watched a movie that everybody else had watched. Of course I don't mind, but if I watched that movie, then I'd have a few more things to talk about with people."

*imply [ɪmˈplaɪ] (감정·생각을) 넌지시 나타내다[비치다], 의미하다 

"What an improvement! What you just said implies your willingness to communicate with others."

*puberty 사춘기

"Maybe it's a puberty thing."

*while you're at  네가 ~하는 김에

"While you're at it, practice your emotions with something fun. 

A: I’m just going to buy some postcards. 

B: Can you get me some stamps while you’re at it?’ 

+) While you're at it, could you wash my car, too?  

     하시는 김에 제 차도 좀 세차해 주실래요?

     죽이는 김에 나도 죽여라.

*blank canvas 깨끗한 캔버스, 아무것도 없는 상태

*fill up 채우다

"You're basically a blank canvas. Better to fill it up with good things rather than bad things."

"I'll try. I don't know how but it's better to try than do nothing."

*tricky business 까다로운 일, 복잡한 상황

Emotions are tricky business...

*see the world in a new light 세상을 새롭게 보다

You'll suddenly see the world in a completely new light.

It doesn't feel anything, and it never gets hurt either.

*stomp on 밟다

*cope 대처하다, (어려운 상황이나 문제를) 처리하거나 다루다

*worn down 닳아지다

But imagine if it felt how many times it got kicked, stomped on, rolled, and worn down every day, how would it cope? 

*make sense 이치에 맞다, 이해하다

I'm not sure if this makes any sense to you ... what I'm trying to say is ...

I asked after a beat.

*pride 자존심

*hurt one's pride 자존심을 상하게 하다

It seems that killing the butterfly in front of you has really hurt his pride.

*put something more simply 더 간단하게 설명하다

I was actually thinking about how I could put this more simply.

*get to know 알게 되다

*feel what you feel 네가 느끼는 것을 느끼다(다른 사람이 느끼는 감정이나 상태를 공감하거나 이해하려고 노력하다)

He wants to get to know you, and he wants to feel what you feel. 

*initiate [ɪˈnɪʃieɪt] (~가 ~을 처음으로) 접하게 하다, 개시되게 하다

*initiate contact 연락을 시작하다

"It seems like he was always the one initiating contact between you two. How about you initiate once in a while?"

*a hundred answers to one question 한 가지 질문에 대한 백 가지 답 

There are a hundred answers to one question in this world. 

And the world is even more of a puzzle at your age, when you have to search for answers yourself.

"What did Gon do most often to get close to you?"

"Hit me."

"Sorry, I forgot. Let's leave that one out. What's the next thing he did most often?"

I thought for a while. "He visited me."

"It seems you've found one answer."

곤은 너랑 가까워지려고 가장 자주 한 건 뭐였니?"

"저를 때렸어요."

"미안, 깜빡했다. 그건 빼자. 그 다음으로 그가 가장 자주 했던 건 뭐니?"

한동안 생각해보다가 나는 말했다. "저를 찾아왔어요."

"하나의 답을 찾은 것 같구나."
*leave out ~을 빼먹다, 제외하다

- Leave(놓아두다) + out(밖으로)

*unbroken 중단되지[방해받지/끊어지지] 않는

She managed to peel the apple in one long, unbroken spiral.

*strike up a conversation 대화를 시작하다

He seemed surprised to see me, but the housekeeper struck up a conversation to make things less awkward.

"Welcome home, Gon. Your friend's here to see you. He's been waiting for half an hour. Your father says he'll be home late. Did you eat?"

*gruff (말투나 태도가) 거친, 공손하지 않은

Gon was back to his usual, gruff self.

*pout [paʊt] 입술이[을]) 뿌루퉁하다[뿌루퉁 내밀다], 코웃음을 치다

Gon pouted. 

*slurp 소리를 내며 먹다

He must've been starving actually, since he began to noisily slurp the noodles at once.

*get along with ~와 잘 지내다, 사이가 좋다

It seemed he still wasn't getting along with his dad. 

*penthouse 펜트하우스(고층 건물 맨 위층에 자리한 고급 아파트)

*overlook 내려다보다

*landmark 명소, 특정 지역[도시]에서 중요한 역할을 하는 건축물이나 장소

A clean, luxurious penthouse that overlooked the Han River and almost every landmark in Seoul. But Gon said he didn't feel like he was living that high up.

*connect with 소통하려고 노력하다

Professor Yun exhausted all his energy in the beginning, trying to connect with Gon, and had soon given up.

*unbridged 채워지지 않은, 다리가 없는

The gap between father and son remained unbridged.

*juvie 소년원

That guy . .. never asked me what my life was like before. Or what I'd been through in juvie, or what kind of kids I hung out with. 

*stuck-up 고상한, 거만한, 거들먹거리는

He put me into some stuck-up school in Gangnam. 

*raise hell 소란을 피우다, 대소동을 일으키다, 불평하다

So I raised hell.

*have it [부정문에서] 용인[용납]하다, 결과적으로 …이 되다

*wasn't having it 받아들이지 않았다, (상황이나 행동을) 용납하지 않았다

Of course the school wasn't having it.

That's why he didn't let me see that woman before she died ..

Mom. Whenever the word came up, Gon lapsed into a sudden silence.

*pedestrian [pəˈdestriən] 보행자 

Gon remembered only one thing about his mother: her warm and tender hands. 

*pull a prank 장난을 치다, 어려움을 주거나 곤란하게 만들다

+) He pull pranks all the time.

Whenever life pulled brutal pranks on him, Gon would think that life was like having your mom hold your hands one moment, warm and safe, then suddenly drop them with no explanation. No matter how hard he tried to grab hold, he was always abandoned in the end.

Two reasons. For one, you didn't judge me the way other kids do, thanks to your special brain.

*for nothing 아무런 까닭도 없이, 어떤 이유 없이

*bring oneself to do something 자신에게 강요해서 ~을 하다, 스스로 감행하다 

I couldn't bring myself to ask ...

"What was she like?" 그녀는 어땠어?

It took me a while to understand his question.

*go back through one's memory 기억을 되새겨보다

*ashen [ˈæʃn] 잿빛인

*ashen face 창백한 얼굴

"She looked like you."

"I saw her pictures but I couldn't see the resemblance."

*superimpose (어떤 요소·특질을) 덧붙이다[첨가하다], 겹쳐 놓다

I superimposed my memory of her face on his.

The eyes. The outline of your face. The way you smile. 

*in one's shoes ~의 입장이 되어, 입장을 바꿔놓고

"Anybody would do the same in her shoes."

누구든 그녀의 입장에서는 똑같이 했을거야. 

*feature 특징

"But she must've tried to find her features in your face."

"What--what were her last words?"

"She just hugged me. Very tight.

*get the word out 말을 내뱉다, 말을 퍼트리다

+) Alf just could not get the words out properly. 

    알프는 제대로 말을 잇지 못했다.

+) He did love her, but he couldn't get the words out.

    그는 그녀를 사랑했지만 그것을 말하지는 못했다.

Then as if he could hardly get the words out, he whispered,

"Was it warm? Her arms."

*hunch (등을) 구부리다, 예감

*deflate[difléit] 공기를 빼다, (타이어·풍선 등이 공기가 빠져) 오므라들다

*a deflated balloon 바람이 빠진 풍선

*buckle 찌그러지다, 휘어지다; 찌그리다, 휘다, 버클로 잠그다[잠기다]

*buckled 무너진, 주춤한

*sink down 맥없이 주저앉다, 가라앉다, 무너지다
