*come down 내려오다[내리다], 떨어지다, 무너져[떨어져] 내리다, 추락하다

My fever came down by morning. But another bizarre symptom appeared.

+) Come down this minute! 

    지금 당장 내려 와!

+) The name has come down from the last century. 

    그 이름은 지난 세기 때부터 전해 내려온 것이다.

*thorn 가시, 날카로운 것

*prick 찌르다, 쐬다

That whole day I felt as if a thorn were pricking my chest.

*sundown 해질녘, 해가 지는 시간

Gon stopped by the bookstore around sundown.

"Dude, you okay? You look pale."

"It hurts."

"What hurts?"

Gon suggested we eat out but I turned him down.

He smacked his lips then disappeared. 

My body felt heavy as I twisted and turned. I couldn't tell what was wrong with me.

Dr. Shim added that the noodles alone wouldn't be enough for a growing teen and ordered fried jumbo shrimp too, but I didn't touch a thing.  닥터 심은 자라나는 십대에게 국수로는 부족하다며 튀김 새우도 시켰지만, 나는 손을 대지 않았다.

There wasn't much to tell, but because I was rambling so much, it took twice as long as it should have.

"Well, I think you can explain in more detail."

"More detail? What do you mean?"

*leave out 빼다, 생략하다; 무시하다(=omit, exclude; neglect.)

"Well, I just thought, maybe there were some things you left out because you didn't know how to accurately express them. How about you take time to go over the details, one at a time? When did you first start having your symptoms? Was there some kind of trigger?"

*hear me out 내 얘기좀 (끝까지/잘) 들어봐 

"It's hard to explain, but will you still hear me out?"

+) At least hear me out before making up your mind. 

    네 마음의 결정을 하기 전에 내 이야기 좀 끝까지 들어봐.

*recount (특히 자기가 경험한 것에 대해)말하다, 자세히 털어놓다, 회상하다

I took a deep breath and tried to recount the events of the day before with as much detail as possible. 

+) She was asked to recount the details of the conversation to the court. 그녀는 법정에서 그 대화의 자세한 내용을 진술해 달라는 요청을 받았다.

*ramble (특히 오랫동안) 횡설수설하다[지껄이다], 횡설수설(말·글), 걷다

*ramble on 장황하게 이야기하다, 무의미하게 말하다

But as I rambled on, I noticed Dr. Shim's face soften, and by the time I finished, he had a wide smile on his face.

He held out his hand and I took it reflexively. He gave me a firm handshake.

"How much taller have you gotten since early this year?"

"Three and a half inches."

"See? That's a huge growth in such a short time. I'm sure your brain must have drastically changed as well. 

If I were a neurosurgeon, I would suggest you get an MRI scan and check the progress of your brain.

Getting pictures taken of my brain was not a pleasant memory.

*babble (알아듣기 어렵게) 지껄이다, 횡설수설하다, 횡설수설

*tongue-tied 말이 잘 안나오는, 말문이 막힌, 할 말을 잃은

I babbled and got tongue-tied with even simple questions.

I got tongue-tied.(Day 13)

+) You seem a little tongue-tied. 

     너 말문이 막힌 것 같구나.

+) She was tongue-tied for the first few minutes. 

    그녀는 처음 수 분 동안은 아무 말도 못했다.

+) He got tongue-tied whenever he was left alone with her. 

    그는 그녀와 단둘이만 있으면 혀끝이 굳곤 했다. 

*doodle 낙서를 하다

*crumple 구기다, 구겨지다, 일그러지다

*crumple up 구기적거리다 , 뭉개다

I started doodling, hoping it would clear my thoughts. But somehow I kept writing down not sentences but the same word over and over again. When I realized what I had written, I immediately crumpled up the paper or leaped from my seat.

*annoying 괴롭히는, 성가신, 짜증나는

My annoying symptoms continued. No, they actually got worse with each day.

*throb [θrɑːb] 욱신거리다, 지끈거리다, 고동치다, 울리다 (=pulsate)

*prick  찌르다

My temples throbbed at the sight of Dora, and my ears pricked up when I heard her voice from however far away, among however many people.

I felt my body had outpaced my mind, and that it was as unnecessary and bothersome as a long overcoat in summer. I wanted so much to take it off. If only I could.

Dora started coming by the bookstore often. The time of her visits was irregular.

Sometimes she would turn up on a weekend and sometimes on a weeknight.

But always around the time she was about to visit, my backbone would ache.

*squirm  (초조하거나 불편하거나 하여 몸을) 꿈틀[꼼지락]대다 (=wriggle)

Like an animal instinctively sensing an impending earthquake, like a worm squirming out of the earth before a rainstorm.

본능적으로 임박한 지진을 감지하는 동물처럼, 폭풍우가 오기 전에 지렁이가 땅에서 꿈틀거리며 나오는 것처럼.

*scramble 허둥지둥 움직이다, 재빨리 움직이다, 서로 밀치다[앞다투다]

*ominous 불길한, 불길한 전조가 되는

I would scramble back inside as if I'd just seen something ominous, then I would go about my work as if nothing had happened.

*clear out 정리하다

Dora said she would help clear out the books, but when she found a book she liked, she would sit reading the same page for a long time.

How wonderful, she would often say. I understood the meaning of the word, but I could never feel the splendor it carried.

"Do you go see your mom often?"

"Yeah, every day."

She hesitated for a moment. "Can I come too?"

"Sure," I blurted out even before thinking.

*stuffed [stʌft] 인형이나 베개 등에 솜이나 부직포 등을 넣어 부풀린 상태를 의미, 잔뜩 먹은, 포식을 한, 배가 꽉 찬, 배가 너무 부른 (=full)

*stuffed animal 겉은 천으로 되어있고 안은 솜 등으로 채워진 인형, 봉제 인형

*ward 병동

A small stuffed dinosaur sat by a window in Mom's hospital ward. Dora had bought it on the way. I hadn't brought anyone here before.

*every so often 가끔[종종]

I knew Dr. Shim stopped by every so often, but neither of us had ever suggested visiting Mom together. 

"Hello, Mrs. Seon. I'm Dora, Yunjae's friend. You're so beautiful.

Yunjae is doing great at school, all healthy and well. You should wake up and see him. I'm sure you will soon."

"Now it's your turn."

"Do what I just did."

"Mom can't hear anything anyway," 

"It's no big deal. It's just saying hi."

"Do you want some time alone with her? I can leave."

Just then, the word "Mom" came out of my mouth. I began to share with her all that had happened to me. Come to think of it, there were a lot of things I hadn't told her. 

*constellation 별자리

Mom was still staring up at the constellations on the ceiling, but I realized that talking to her wasn't so pointless after all. Maybe it was similar to how Dr. Shim baked for his dead wife.

엄마는 여전히 천장의 별자리를 올려다보고 있었지만, 엄마에게 이야기하는 것이 그리 헛되지 않다는 것을 깨달았다. 어쩌면 닥터 심이 죽은 아내를 위해 빵을 굽는 것과 비슷했을지도 모르겠다.

As I grew closer to Dora, I started to feel like I was keeping a secret from Gon.

*fishy 수상한 (냄새가 나는), (=suspicious), 생선 냄새[맛]가 나는

"Something smells fishy about you."

+) As I have said, there is something fishy about this. 

   내가 말해왔듯이, 뭔가 구린내가 나는게 있는 것 같아.

*put one’s finger on …을 확실히[분명히] 지적하다[정확하게 이해하다]

*scowl 빤히 쳐다보다, 빤히 노려보다

"I can't put my finger on it." He scowled at me. "You hiding something from me?"

*push further 더 물어보다, 더 파고들다

I would've told him about Dora if he had pushed me further.

만약 그가 더 물어봤으면, 나는 도라에 대해 그에게 말했을 거다.

*well-known 유명한, 알려진

*troublemaker 문제를 일으키는 사람, 골치 아픈 사람

They were fairly well-known troublemakers in the neighborhood. Some of them had gone to the same juvenile center as Gon.

*infamous 악명 높은, 악평 받는

A kid called Steamed Bun was particularly infamous among them.

*batter [ˈbætə(r)] 반죽, 튀김옷, 두드리다[때리다/구타하다]

He was like a stick doll whose hands and feet were made of thick batter. 그는 두꺼운 반죽으로 된 손과 발을 가진 막대인형 같았다.

There's a connection between us. You know why? Because at least they don't judge me the way other people do, telling me to do this and that."

*hear from ~로부터 듣다, ~에서 들은 바에 의하면

*find sth funny/interesting (뭔가) 웃기거나 흥미로운 것으로 여기다

"Gon told me the stories he'd heard from Steamed Bun's gang and thought they were funny, but I didn't find them funny or interesting at all."

*gabble [ˈɡæbl] 지껄이다, 빠르게 말하다

Gon went on and on, laughing out loud, gabbling nonsense. I just listened.

*scrutinize  [ˈskruːtənaɪz] 면밀히 조사하다, 세밀히 검토하다

Gon was still being scrutinized at school.

Even though Gon was actually just sleeping through classes instead of causing trouble, his reputation still worsened.

*stir up  일으키다[유발/유도하다], 일게 하다

*real shit 실제 문제나 곤란한 상황, 현실적이고 중대한 문제나 상황

"Should I go ahead and stir up real shit?"

진짜 문제를 일으켜볼까?

*nonchalantly 무심하게, 태연하게

Gon chewed gum noisily, acting nonchalantly. 

*abyss [əˈbɪs] 심연, 깊고 어두운 곳

He seemed to be doing everything he could to throw himself into the abyss. 

*haughtily 건방지게, 오만하게, 거들먹거들먹 

+) haughty [ˈhɔːti] 거만한, 오만한 (=arrogant)

In class, he sat haughtily in his chair, one leg crossed over the other, and deliberately paid no attention to teachers.

+) Stop acting so haughtily. 

    너무 교만하게 굴지 마라

+) Don't ever think of seconds haughtily. 

     잠시라도 건방지게 굴 생각도 말아라. 

*tell off 나무라다, 야단치다, 한마디 하다

When they told him off, he glared at them.

+) I'll tell him off. 

    제가 그를 꾸짖겠습니다.

+) ​I've wanted to tell her off for the last six weeks.

    지난 6개월동안 저도 그녀에게 한마디 하고 싶었었어요.

*ominous [|ɑːmɪnəs] 불길한 (=foreboding) 불길하게 다가오는

Whenever Gon behaved like that, I felt a sudden, heavy rock sinking in my heart. Kind of like when Dora's hair had touched my skin. But this was different, heavier and ominous.
