Day 2(4-5/13-20p)

*contradictory 모순되는 (=conflicting)

Even after I learned the word "paradox"-which meant putting contradictory ideas together-I was confused.

*out of love 사랑하는 마음에서, 좋아서

+) She helped him, not out of duty, but out of love.

    그녀는 그를 도왔는데, 의무감 때문이 아니라 사랑 때문이었다.

+) They adopted a rescue dog out of love for animals.

    그들은 동물을 사랑하는 마음에서 구조된 개를 입양했다.

*fall out of love 사랑이 식다

+) I have fallen out of love with him.

    그에 대한 나의 사랑이 식었다.

Anyways, she said she called me that out of love, so I decided to trust her.

*stress 강조하다, (발음에) 강세를 두다

*fall on …으로 돌려지다, 쏠리다, …위에 떨어지다, 쓰러지다

+) The responsibility falls on him. 

    책임은 그에게 있다.

+) The leaves fell on the ground after the wind blew.

Did the stress fall on "adorable" or "monster?"

*well up (눈물이) 차오르다

+) That movie makes me well up every time. 

    그 영화를 볼 때마다 눈물이 고인다.

+) Tears welled up in Tina's eyes when she heard the news.

    Tina는 그 소식을 듣고 눈에서 눈물이 차 올랐다(눈에 눈물이 그렁그렁했다).

Tears welled up Mom's eyes as Granny told her about the Mickey Mouse girl.

"I knew this day would come... I just didn't expect it to be this soon..."

*outburst (감정의) 폭발[분출], (특정 활동·태도의) 급격한 증가

*cluck 혀를 쯧쯧 차다, (닭이) 꼬꼬댁거리다

*cluck one's tongue 혀를 차다

*rest on ~에 시선이 머물다

*heave a deep sigh - 깊게 한숨을 내쉬다, 큰 심호흡을 하며 한숨을 쉬다

Granny clucked her tongue and shook her head, her eyes resting on a corner of the ceiling, heaving a deep sigh.

She glanced at me, clucking her tongue.(11p)

I was just slow to develop.

*bat an eye 반응하다 = react 

I didn't bat an eye. 눈하나 깜빡하지 않다.

Whatever she did, Mom couldn't make me smile.

+) It's really good for a 10 thousand won pizza.

    만원 짜리 피자 치고는 꽤 맛있어.

+) For an American(for someone from the US), he speaks Korean well. 미국인(미국에서 온 사람) 치고는 그는 한국말을 잘한다.

Except for the lack of smiles, the test results showed that my height, weight, and behavioral development were all normal for my age.

*dismiss (고려할 가치가 없다고) 묵살[일축]하다, (생각·느낌을) 떨쳐 버리다

For a while after that, Mom tried to comfort herself by saying that I was just a little quieter than other kids.

She'd been right to worry.

I still have a faint burn mark like a medal from that day.

The evidence kept adding up.

When Mom lost track of me for a moment, I reached out to touch his dog, who bared his teeth and growled.

Mom had to constantly intervene.

So, like any mother, she tried to find a way to cast her doubts about her child in a positive light.

That day is the first memory carved into my brain.

It's blurry as if I were watching from underwater, but comes into sharp focus every once in a while, like this:

Eventually, I start to get a little bored and fidget with my feet, kicking at the old man's desk.

Stop acting miserable, you noisy woman, I've had enough!

Mom purses her lips: the picking-hee-battles face.(WYTT 34-230p)

Mom purses her lips tight like a scolded teenager, silently trembling.

Next, you slowly tear the top part of the package and open the double zipper.

Finally, when the scent fills you up from deep inside, you pop half a handful of them into your mouth.

The reason I bother going through this ritual is not because I like almonds. 나는 이 의식을 거치는 이유가 아몬드를 좋아해서가 아니에요.

There was no way of getting around them.

*amygdalae 아미그달라, 편도체 

-두뇌 안에 있는 아몬드 모양의 부분으로 감정을 조절하거나 기억에 관련된 기능을 함

In fact, they're called "amygdalae," derived from the Latin word for almond because their size and shape are exactly like one.

But for some reason, my almonds don't seem to work well. They don't really light up when they are stimulated.

The words "emotion" and "empathy" are just meaningless letters in print.
