세계도서시장을 매료시킨 한국 문학, 100만 부 베스트셀러, 올타임 스테디셀러가 된 Almond입니다. 감정이 없는 소년이 전해주는 오만가지 감정의 빛깔을 원서로 읽으며 영어공부를 해 봅니다.

Day 4(10-13/29-41p)

*persistent efforts 끈질긴 노력

*mandatory 의무적인, 강제적인

*get along 잘 지내다, 어울리다

Thanks to Mom's persistent efforts and my mandatory daily training, I slowly learned to get along at school without too much trouble.

*blend in 어울리다, 녹아들다

*stay silent 침묵하다

Most of the time, it was enough to stay silent.

*get angry 화를 내다

*look patient 인내심 있는 것처럼 보이다

*look serious 진지한 것처럼 보이다

*look strong 강한 것처럼 보이다

*silence is golden 침묵은 금이다 (고요함이 가치 있다는 속담)

Silence was definitely golden.

*tricky situations 까다로운 상황들

*get through 해결하다, 극복하다

They were the magic words that helped me get through most tricky situations. 

*overwhelming 압도적인, 어려운

*serene [səˈriːn] 고요한, 평화로운, 조용한

It was like paying first when there was nothing I wanted to buy and when I had no idea what anything cost. It was as overwhelming as trying to make big waves on a serene lake.

그것은 마치 내가 사고 싶은 게 없고 물건의 가격을 전혀 모르는 상태에서 먼저 돈을 내는 것과 같았다. 그것은 고요한 호수에 큰 물결을 만드는 것 만큼 어려웠다.

*shoot back 쏘아붙이다

How could you do this to me! 어떻게 이럴 수 있어!

*clench one's fists 주먹을 꽉 쥐다

Or, if somebody bumped into me or broke a promise, I had to shoot back, "How could you do this to me!" Then cry and clench my fists.

*label as ~로 레이블링하다, 붙이다

*act out 감정을 표현하다, 연기하다

She added that I should act out these emotions once in a while.

"Human beings are a product of their education, after all. You can do it."

*for one's sake ~을 위해서 

Mom said everything was for my sake, calling it love. 

*nag (계속) 괴롭히다, 잔소리하다, 바가지를 긁다, 꾸짖다

*such and such 그런 그런, 이런 저런

Love, according to Mom's actions, was nothing more than nagging about every little thing, with teary eyes, about how one should act such and such in this and that situation. 

*codes of conduct 행동 지침[수칙], 윤리 강령

*too much honesty hurts others 너무 솔직함은 다른 사람을 상처시킨다

*stuck in one's brain 머릿속에 각인되어 있다

That was all thanks to one of Mom's codes of conduct--Too much honesty hurts others-which I had memorized over and over so that it was stuck in my brain.

*wavelength [ˈweɪvleŋθ] 파장, (특정 라디오 방송국 등이 사용하는) 주파수

*on the same wavelength 비슷한 생각이나 의견을 가지다, 코드가 맞다

+) We are not on the same wavelength. 

     당신하고는 말이 안 통한다

+) I think we're on the same wavelength here. 

    이제야 말이 좀 통하네요.

To use Granny's own words, I was more "on the same wavelength with her than with Mom.

*trait [treɪt] (성격상의) 특성

Actually, Mom and Granny didn't share any similar physical or personality traits. 

*plum-flavored candy 자두 맛 사탕

*aside from …외에는, …을 제외하고, ...뿐만 아니라(=apart from)

+) Aside from a few scratches, I’m OK.

    난 몇 군데 긁힌 것 외에는 괜찮아요.

They didn't even like the same things-aside from the fact they both loved plum-flavored candy.

*sheen [ʃiːn] 윤(기), 광택 (=shine)

*precious little joys 소중한 작은 즐거움

*go well with ~와 잘 어울리다

+) Does this go well with green?

    이거는 초록색이 어울리나?

"I know this sounds funny, but the salty blood taste actually goes well with the sweetness," 

*ointment 연고

*bored with ~에 지겨워하다

It's strange, but I was never bored with anything Granny said, no matter how many times I heard her say it.

*out of nowhere 어디선가, 갑자기

Granny came into my life out of nowhere.

*become tired of ~에 지쳐가다

*reach out for help 도움을 청하다

*cut family ties 가족 관계를 끊다

+) She has cut all ties with her family.

   그녀는 가족과 모든 연락을 끊었다.

Their sole reason for cutting family ties was because someone not in the family, who later became my dad.

Granny lost Grandpa to cancer when she was pregnant with Mom.

*pick on 혹평하다, 비난하다, 괴롭히다

+) His brother used to pick on him. 

    형이 툭하면 못살게 굴곤 했다.

+) Pick on Phoebe to get her attention. 

    피비의 관심을 끌려면 트집을 잡아라.

*be picked on 놀림을 받다

From then on, she had dedicated her life to making sure her daughter wouldn't be picked on for being a fatherless child.

*sacrifice oneself for ~을 위해 스스로를 희생하다

She basically sacrificed herself for Mom. 

*make it to ~에 합격하다, 도달하다, 해내다

+) She is determined to make it to the top. 

    그녀는 최고의 자리에까지 오를 각오이다.

+) I will make it to the top. 

    전 인정 받을 거예요.

Fortunately, Mom-though not exceptional did pretty well in school and made it to one of the women's universities in Seoul. 

*punk 머저리, 불량한 남자[청년]

*eternal 영원한, 끊임없는

*over one's dead body 눈에 흙이 들어가기 전엔 절대 안 돼, 눈을 감기 전에는 안 돼

*retort [rɪˈtɔːrt] 쏘아붙이다, 응수[대꾸]하다

Granny vowed that the marriage would take place over her dead body, to which Mom retorted that love is not for some nobody to sign off on for approval. 

Mom got a slap on the cheek as a result.

*might as well (어차피/기왕 이렇게 된거) ~하는 것이 좋다, (그냥) ~나 해야겠다, (차라리)~하는 편이 낫다

구슬쌤 잘못 쓰면 뉘앙스가 확- 달라지는 might as well

"If you disapprove so much I might as well get pregnant!"

*get by (버티다, 겨우 버티다) 어려운 상황을 버티며 살아가다

During those years, Mom tried to get by and held out until she realized all this enduring was no use. 

*brink [brɪŋk](아주 새롭거나 위험하거나 흥미로운 상황이 발생하기) 직전

*on the brink of …의 직전에(=on the verge of)

+) The country is teetering on the brink of civil war. 

   그 나라는 금방이라도 내전으로 치달을 듯한 상태에 있다.

*breakdown 정신적 붕괴, 과로로 인한 신체적 약화, 탈진한 상태

Until the very brink of a breakdown.

*slouch [slaʊtʃ] 구부정하니 서다[앉다/움직이다], 구부정한[축 늘어진 듯한] 자세

She kept sitting up straight then slouching.

*everlasting [ˌevərˈlæstɪŋ] 영원한, 변치 않는 (=eternal) 끊임없는

*stuff (재빨리되는대로) 쑤셔 넣다, 밀어넣다 

Reluctantly, Mom started stuffing the cold burger into her mouth.

*worked up the courage 용기를 내다

Mom finally worked up the courage to put her hands on my shoulders and say in a tiny, faint voice, "This is him."

*wench 젊은 처자, 여자(비하적)

"You could've had a better life, poor wench."

*weep [wiːp]  울다, 눈물을 흘리다

*pour out (감정이나 이야기를 솔직하게) 토로하다

*go through (어려운 상황이나 경험을) 겪다

Between her barely open lips, she poured out to Granny everything she had gone through in the past seven years.

*gape [ɡeɪp]  (놀라서) 입을 딱 벌리고 바라보다

Mom gaped at Granny, who had now drawn her face close to mine, smiling.

*hold a grudge 뒤끝있다, 원한을 품다

+) It's never good to hold a grudge.

    마음에 담아 두는 건 절대 좋은 거 아니야.

+) Don't hold a grudge about it. 

     그거에 대해 나쁜 감정 갖지마.

But Granny, who Mom always said loved to hold a grudge, grumbled at every opportunity.

*way to go 잘했어, 대단하다, 수고했어

"Way to go, you rotten wench."

*shower 소나기처럼 쏟아붓다

Granny showered Mom with it day and night.

Anyway, as we reunited with Granny, we were able to end the never-ending cycle of moving in and out, and finally settled in for good.

*press for cash 돈에 쫓기다, 금전적으로 어려움을 겪다

*well-read, well-educated 폭넓은 지식을 가지고 교육을 잘 받은

*unmarried woman of words 작가 활동하며 혼자 생활하는 여성

*solitude [ˈsɑːlətuːd] 고독 (=privacy)

*age gracefully 우아하게 나이를 먹다

+) Let's age gracefully, my friend.

     친구야, 곱게 늙자.

She had wanted her to be an "unmarried woman of words" who spent her entire life in solitude yet aged gracefully.

*head over heels 몽땅, 완전히, 거꾸로

*head over heels in love 사랑에 빠져 정신을 못 차리는

+) He fell head over heels in love with her.

    그는 그녀에게 홀딱 반했다

Who knew the only thing she'd learn from books was to fall head over heels in love with some ignorant punk.

*impractical (비현실적인) 실제로 적용하기 힘든, 현실적으로 어려운

A used-book store was the most impractical decision my practical mom had ever made.

*cherished dream 소중한 꿈, 오랜 기간 동안 소중히 품은 꿈

It had been a cherished dream of hers for many years. 

*dare [der] …할 용기가 있다, 감히 …하다, …할 엄두를 내다

*dare not ...할 용기가 없다, 엄두를 못 내다

+) I dare not think of that.  

   그런 일은 감히 생각할 수도 없다

But Mom said she dared not write about all the scars life had left her over the years.

Writing would mean she'd have to sell her own life.

*guts (어려운 일을 할 수 있는) 용기 [결단력]

구슬쌤 미드에 지겹도록 나오지만 오역하기 쉬운 gut과 guts

Basically, she didn't have the guts to be a writer.

*handpick 일일이 골라내다, 주의 깊게 선택하거나 고르다

*flow into …로 흘러들다

*scent of time 시간의 향기, 오래된 것이 가지는 독특한 매력이나 분위기

Books that were already drenched in the scent of time. 

이미 시간의 향기로 적시어진 책들이었다. 

*hence [hens] 이런 이유로

*residential area 주거 지역, 주택이 밀집한 지역

*niche books 특정 주제나 관심 분야에 특화된 책들

*knack [næk] (타고난) 재주, (경험으로 익힌) 요령, ~하는 버릇

*have a knack for[with]~하는 재주가 있다, 재능이 있다

You seem to have a knack with horses.(매직트리하우스 10-5/37p)

+) I think I have a knack for it. 나 소질 있나본데.

+) You really have a knack for it. 
    정말 재주가 좋으시네요.

She had a knack for picking out old niche books that readers would love, plus she bought them at cheap prices. 

We managed to sell just enough books to afford our living expenses.
