영어원서 읽기 챌린지, 매직북클럽 10월은 책은  Almond입니다. 

영어공부를 하기 좋은 방법 중의 하나가 바로 영어원서를 읽는 것입니다. 원서를 통해 작가가 반복해서 사용하는 단어와 표현들로 자연스럽게 어휘력이 향상됩니다. 책을 읽으며 독해능력을 높일 수 있습니다.

*deduce [dɪˈduːs] 추론[추정]하다, 결론을 도출하다

+) We can deduce that. I've said that already! 

     유추할 수 있는 거죠. 제가 이미 얘기했잖아요!

+) We can deduce a lot from what people choose to buy. 

    사람들이 무엇을 선택해서 사는지를 보고 많은 것을 추론할 수 있다.

"The bread here doesn't look tasty," though I had no idea how she'd deduced that just by looking at the sign.

But still, it was always crowded with people, the line often stretching all the way down to the first floor.

Customers at the end of the line would even browse in our bookstore.

After Granny had a bite, she no longer complained about it not looking tasty.

For me, it was just okay. It was like any other food.

With a partition dividing an open space in the middle, there was nothing but a counter, a display stand, and a table on one side, and the baking area presumably on the other side.

His answer was longer than necessary.

"I'm very sorry for what you went through. I've been thinking for a while about how I can help you in some way."

"Well, I know we've just met, but is there anything you need or anything you want to ask?"

This time he burst out laughing. 

Special. I knew what she must've meant.

+) I have a habit of biting it.

    제가 이거 뜯는 습관이 있어서요.

It's a habit of mine that's a little difficult to quit.

Your mom was the type of person who made everyone around her happy.

*droop [druːp] 아래로 처지다[늘어지다], 풀이 죽다, (기가) 꺾이다

If he was sad for Mom, it might've made her feel good. That was one of the tips she'd given me. 

그가 엄마를 위해 슬퍼한다면, 그런 모습이 엄마에게 기쁨을 줄 수도 있었을 것이다. 그것은 엄마가 나에게 알려준 조언 중 하나였다.

If somebody was sad for my sadness, then I should be happy. The principle that two negatives made a positive. 만약 누군가가 나의 슬픔에 슬퍼한다면, 나는 행복해져야 한다. 두 가지 부정적인 것들이 긍정을 이루는 원리라는 것이다.

What an interesting job transition. 신박해.

Okay, then here's the deal. 

I'll handle all the complicated stuff if you let me.

구슬쌤 잘못 쓰면 뉘앙스가 확- 달라지는 might as well

"If you disapprove so much I might as well get pregnant!"

Do your best to sell as many books as you can, might as well do a good job, right?

When I opened my mouth to drink water, my bad breath assailed my nostrils.

They had been my whole universe.

These other people entered my world gradually, one at a time.

On the second day of the new semester, my homeroom teacher summoned me.

-나이 표현할 때, 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 표현이에요.

She looked maybe just ten years older than me. 

*flop down 털썩 앉다, 주저앉다

*billow (연기구름 등이) 피어오르다, (먼지 등이) 일어나다

*impact (강력한) 영향, 충격, 영향[충격]을 주다 (=affect)

*dry cough 마른기침, 헛기침

*dote on 애지중지하다

*be doted on 귀염을 받다 

+) My grandmother doted on me the most among her grandchildren, as I was the eldest son. 할머니는 장남인 나를 손주 중에서 가장 많이 사랑해 주셨다.

She might be the doted-on youngest daughter. 

*strike up a conversation 대화를 시작하다

she cheerfully struck up a conversation.

"It must have been difficult for you. Is there anything I can help you with?"

So she had some idea of what I had been through.

*psychiatrist 정신과 의사

*working for …에 고용되다, …에서 일하다

*bereaved [bɪˈriːvd]  유족, 유가족, 사별을 당한 사람

 The psychiatrist and lawyer working for the bereaved must've contacted the school.

*class was dismissed 수업이 끝났다

Something happened the next day, just before class was dismissed. 

*put effort into 노력을 기울이다

The homeroom teacher must've put a lot of effort into memorizing the students' names the last couple of days. 

*knack [næk] (타고난) 재주, (경험으로 익힌) 요령, ~하는 버릇

*have a knack for[with]~하는 재주가 있다, 재능이 있다

You seem to have a knack with horses.(매트하 10-5/37p)

+) I think I have a knack for it. 나 소질 있나본데.

+) You really have a knack for it. 
    정말 재주가 좋으시네요.

She had a knack for picking out old niche books that readers would love, plus she bought them at cheap prices. 

*draw attention 관심을 끌다

It was clear she didn't have a knack for drawing people's attention. 

*a habit of …의 버릇

And it must've been a habit of hers to clear her throat because she did that every three seconds.

It's a habit of mine that's a little difficult to quit.

*floor director 텔레비전 쇼에서 관객의 환호를 유도,연출하는 직업

*prompt 격려하다, 유도하다

*genuinely 진심으로, 솔직히

*lukewarm 미지근한

The kids' reaction was lukewarm.

*wane 약해지다, 사그라들다

 But the clapping waned quickly, leaving dozens of their eyes fixed on me in complete silence.

*leave alone 그대로 내버려두다, 혼자 내버려두다

You can just leave me alone. That was what I should've said.

Rumors about me didn't take long to spread.

"Christmas murder" and "Christmas crisis" came up as related keywords. 

*pixelate [ˈpɪksəleɪt] (특히 사람의 신분을 노출시키지 않기 위해 화상을) 여러 화소로 나눠서 보여주다

They had pictures of me taken at the funeral with my face pixelated, but it was done so poorly that everyone who knew me would recognize it was me.

*guts (어려운 일을 할 수 있는) 용기 [결단력]

구슬쌤 미드에 지겹도록 나오지만 오역하기 쉬운 gut과 guts

*have the guts ~할 용기가 있다

One day, a kid had the guts to ask what everyone was curious about. 

Basically, she didn't have the guts to be a writer.

*forsythia [fərˈsɪθiə] 개나리

*get some sunlight 햇빛을 받다

I thought that way the flower could get some sunlight. 

*talk back 반말을 하다, 말을 걸다

*stir up (논쟁·문제 등을) 일으키다[유발/유도하다], 불러일으키다

A boy who often talked back to the teachers and found it amusing that his actions could stir up the crowd. You see that kind everywhere.

*catch someone's eye 눈에 띄다

*snicker 낄낄거리다, 킥킥거리다

He looked around at the other kids, caught some of their eyes, and they snickered together.

*stand still 가만히 있다, 현상을 유지하다, (…을) 참다

+) standstill 명사 정지, 멈춤 (=halt)

Everyone stood still.
