영어원서 읽기가 영어공부에 도움이 되는 걸 알지만 혼자서 꾸준히 읽어나가는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 매일 조금씩 일정 페이지를 읽어나가며 한 권의 영어원서를 완독하는 경험을 해 보세요. 자신감과 성취감을 느끼게 되고, 어느새 다음 영어원서로 무엇을 읽을지 찾고 있는 자신을 발견하게 될 것입니다. 완독의 경험을 해보는 것은 중요합니다. 

Day 8(25-27/81-92p)

That incident made me kind of famous.

*by normal standards 일반적인 기준으로는

When I walked down the hallway, the crowd parted like the Red Sea. 

*bleed to death 피흘리며 죽다

*without batting an eyelash 눈 하나 깜짝 않고, 차분하게

But said he felt nothing without batting an evelash.

+) bat an eye 반응하다 = react 

+) I didn't bat an eye. 눈하나 깜빡하지 않다.

*bear witness (~을) 증명[증언]하다, …의 증거이다

They had borne witness to my strange behavior. 

*outrageous 엄청난, 믿기 어려운

The gossip became outrageous, as gossip often does. 

*scapegoat 희생양, 죄를 지은 사람

Mom used to say that every social community needs a scapegoat. She'd given me all this training because she thought I had a very high possibility of becoming one. 

*blatantly [ˈbleɪtntli] 솔직하게, 노골적으로

The kids quickly realized that I didn't react to anything they said and started asking me weird questions or more blatantly making fun of me.

*utterly 완전히, 전적으로

I was utterly helpless.

I was a topic at the teachers' meeting as well.

*beat around the bush 둘러서 얘기하다, 더듬더듬 얘기하다

Dr. Shim got to the point after beating around the bush for some time, basically suggesting that school might not be the best place for me.

"Nobody can tell you to do that. What I mean is, can you put up with all this kind of treatment until you come of age?"

"Your mom wouldn't want you to be treated this way."

Put differently, to not stand out.

*things don't go as expected 예상대로 되지 않다 

*want their kids to be ordinary 자녀에게 평범하게 살기를 원하다 

*being ordinary is the hardest thing to achieve 평범하게 살기가 가장 어려운 것이다

Parents start out with grand expectations for their kids. But when things don't go as expected, they just want their kids to be ordinary, thinking it's simple. But son, being ordinary is the hardest thing to achieve."

*look back (과거를) 되돌아보다 (=reflect on)

Looking back, Granny must've wanted an ordinary life for Mom, too.

*fit into …에 꼭 들어맞다, 적합[적응]하다; 어울리다

How many of them would actually fit into the so-called smooth road the word implied?

That didn't mean I was extraordinary.

*give it a try 시도해보다

I was just a strange boy wandering around somewhere in between. So I decided to give it a try. To become ordinary.

That was the decision I came to that day.

The more you use it, the better it becomes. I heard certain parts of your brain are weak. But if you practice, you can make them stronger.

Long streaks of rain slid down the window. 

He was the man who later introduced me to a monster.

*bleak [bliːk] 암울한, 절망적인, 으스스한, 음산한

*well up (눈물이) 차오르다

+) That movie makes me well up every time. 

    그 영화를 볼 때마다 눈물이 고인다.

+) Tears welled up in Tina's eyes when she heard the news.

    Tina는 그 소식을 듣고 눈에서 눈물이 차 올랐다(눈에 눈물이 그렁그렁했다).

Tears welled up Mom's eyes as Granny told her about the Mickey Mouse girl.

His shoulders were drooping, his bleak eyes welling up. He could've looked handsome if it weren't for his gloomy expression. 

*gaunt [ɡɔːnt] 수척한, 아주 여윈, 삭막한

His face was dark and gaunt.

*hunch 예감, 직감

+) I'm going off a hunch. 

    나는 직감을 따라가고 있다.

Well, I know "hunch" isn't a word that really fits me.

Technically, I never felt the hunch.

*on second thought 다시 생각해 보니, 근데 말이야

But on second thought, hunches aren't usually just randomly felt. 

*subconsciously 무의식적으로

*causal 원인이 되는, 인과 관계의

+) cause [kɔːz] 원인, 이유, …을 야기하다[초래하다]

So a hunch is actually a causal link. The way he looked at me gave me that kind of a hunch.

*linger [ˈlɪŋɡə(r)] 예상보다 오래) 남다, 오래 머물다, 오랜 시간을 보내다

*linger around 어슬렁거리다, 맴돌다

+) You've been lingering around here for this?

    결국 이러려고 여길 기웃거린 거였어?

*skim through the pages 페이지를 빠르게 훑다, 빠르게 넘겨가며 살펴보다

"More expensive than I thought," he said, skimming through the pages back and forth.

*inspired her to become a writer 그녀가 작가가 되는데 영감을 준

*stubbly (머리털·수염 따위가) 살짝 자라 억센, 그루터기가 많은

 I'm not bragging, I'm just telling you that I'm a credible person. Dr. Shim suggested I meet you in person, so here I am. Actually, I'm here to ask you a favor.

*straightforward 솔직한, 단도직입적인

His back slowly curled like a shrimp's.

*paused for a beat 잠깐 멈추다

He paused for a beat and went on.

*always needed time before saying anything 항상 무언가를 말하기 전에 시간이 필요한 것처럼 보였다

He seemed like he always needed time before saying anything.

*broach [broʊtʃ] (하기 힘든 이야기를) 꺼내다

"You found your son, who didn't turn out to be what she's dreamed of?"

*well-off 잘 사는, 부유한, 경제적으로 풍족한

We were well-off.

*fall apart 무너지다, 허물어지다, 무너져 내리다

+) Their marriage began to fall apart.  

    그들의 결혼생활이 위기를 맞기 시작했다.

+) After all is said and done, it will fall apart. 

    이러쿵저러쿵 해도 결국 그것은 무산될 것이다.

+) My bag is falling apart. I need to get a new one. 

     내 가방이 너무 헐었어. 새로 하나 사야겠어.

Our marriage was falling apart, and she fell ill. These years have been difficult for me, too.

I guessed it could be said he looked like me. Not so much that we had similar physical features, but we gave off similar vibes.

Help you with everything I can. Tears welled up in his eyes. 

It's good to help others if there's no harm. 해를 끼치지 않는다면 다른 사람을 도와주는 것이 좋다.

But I would've made a different choice had I met Gon earlier. Because by making this decision, I unintentionally stole something from him forever.

Mrs. Yun must've loved flowers. Their smell gave me a headache.

*terminally ill patient 임종 환자, 치료가 불가능하게 고착된 환자

She reminded me of those terminally ill patients from the movies. 

*lift the gloom 우울함을 떨쳐내다

*stick-thin 가느다란, 매우 마른

After all these years.Tears streamed down her face.

Mommy wanted to do a lot of things with you, really. 

Things didn't work out as I'd hoped. 

*solely [ˈsoʊlli] 오로지, 단지; 단독으로

She seemed to pour all her remaining strength solely onto me.

*be tired out 몹시 지치다

She seemed to have tired herself out, as her eyelids began to droop.
